Aura is the Greek goddess of the breeze; her virtue is being as swift as the wind. Aura flows, moves with speed, and generates a positive vibration around her: she is the paradigm of the contemporary woman in the context of today’s accelerated society. The way to represent this power, which also protects and exalts, is through the veil—an element that alludes to the celestial dome and the separation between the upper and lower worlds. The role of the veil is equivalent to the firmament that divides the material and spiritual worlds. Therefore, removing veils or garments and shedding adornments are gestures associated with the search for truth.
To speak of the transformative power of feminine values, Miguel Soler-Roig travels to Greece and turns to mythology as a set of imagination-based narratives that explain the universe and activate the power of the individual. In a way, myths are an altered and pseudo-dreamlike version of reality. In dreams, everything is possible: people acquire superhuman powers, nature becomes supernatural, the weak become powerful… There is a kind of inversion of contexts and settings. In short, another version of reality—more exciting, exotic, magical, and surprising.
In the exhibition Aura Revealed, the two experiential stages—dream and reality—are shown through the figure of the goddess Aura as a connecting entity, symbolized in photographic images—accompanied by the veil—in her most earthly attribute. In the images, we see the veil in suspension, surrounding the goddess and empowering her, preparing her to access the dream dimension, but making it clear that she is still in the territory of the real: this is confirmed by a fourth photograph in which the veil rests upon a rock.
Upon entering the space, we enter a dreamlike universe inhabited by the representation of the goddess Aura in the full exercise of her power. Her potential has been revealed. This particular and magical cosmos is expressed through the digital technique of solarization combined with the overlaying of images and texts. Visual multiplication through transparencies allows the viewer several levels of reading: on one hand, the exaltation of the Greek goddess figure in various stages; on the other, the strength of the elements that accompany the air, such as fire, water, and earth.
To close the circle of this immersive fiction, texts with Greek-inspired calligraphy are integrated into the photographs. These are poems written by the artist himself. Integrated into the images, they become visual poems. Mystery arises in their messages… are they real? Can they be deciphered? The questions remain in the viewer’s mind, but among the doubts, there is one certainty: in one of the photographs, the word GODDESS emerges among the letters of an original Greek slab. The subtlety of reality overflows fantasy and overwhelms.
