The Parangolé: A Poetic-Political Manifesto
The Parangolé is a visionary poetic-political proposal. It is a manifestation of canons distinct from Eurocentric ones; therein we find this intersection of perspectives between the highbrow and the vernacular—an artistic renewal strategy articulated within a project of great innovation and aesthetic vitality. Hélio Oiticica (1937–1980) is widely considered one of Brazil’s leading 20th-century artists and a benchmark for much of the contemporary art produced since the 1960s, primarily through his participatory artworks, performative environments, avant-garde films, and abstract paintings. By the end of the 1950s, Oiticica would become a central figure in Brazilian Neo-Constructivism (1959–61), which included other innovative artists such as Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, and the poet Ferreira Gullar, ultimately giving rise to the artistic movement known as Tropicalismo.
